As the Director of Discipleship at my church, I get to cast a vision for our team and our church every month. March’s focus is unity. I thought I’d share my thoughts here as well:
A vision is ‘a vivid, imaginative conception’. Through a monthly focus for our teams, my prayer is that it will stir our spiritual imaginations and that we would be able to live out the part of the Lord’s prayer that says ‘your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’ I think we all want AHOP to look and feel a little bit more like heaven.
This month’s focus is unity.
As many of you know, I am a Resident Director at Cedarville. In August, we have a training time for our Resident Assistants and we usually invite someone to come and encourage our students from the Word. This year, we invited Pastor Jason Curry from Southgate. Pastor Curry said this when challenging us on community:
‘Redemptive community is built when we are so captivated by the Gospel that Christ himself becomes powerfully present in us as we seek to love the people around us.’
I am reminded of Jesus’ high priestly prayer in John 17. Jesus prays that we would be one, as He and the Father are one. I am blown away by that prayer. Unity is the heart of our Father for His people. And 1 Corinthians 13 makes it clear that if we don’t have love we have nothing. James 3:9 says about our tongues, ‘With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.’
Are we loving our people well?
Do our volunteers understand the significance of their roles in pursuing unity?
Does our speech speak the message of unity?
